Computer problems, updates pending
August 18th, 2009
Hey guys, you may have noticed only one update last week. This is because I am having some pretty terrible computer problems. There was a heat wave here and now my computer seems to only want to turn on for about 5 minutes at a time and then shut itself down. I’m seeking help, unit then the updates will be sparse.
Sorry to disapoint! I have a whole bunch of comics to post but no way to get them online. If things get really bad I will borrow a computer and get things done that way.
I’m also trying to get a book together collecting all of Chester, so this also puts a bit of a damper on that as well. Stay tuned!

Assuming it’s a desktop, open it up and vacuum out all the dust. Usually the fans get clogged up and air isn’t flowing enough.

Computer turning off after 5 minutes is usually a stalled fan. Look at the power supply fan first. Get it fixed quick!

Getting the silly stuff out of the way, have you used some compressed air on the fans/vents?

Well do you know for a fact that it’s overheating?

That sounds like a thermal issue.
If you haven’t done so, you should check if all the fans are running in the case – assuming a desktop.. It would be the same problem as a laptop, but slightly more difficult to fix. If the chip or video card overheat, the machine would either bluescreen or freeze up after a few minutes – Lasting longer than normal if the machine is at a cold boot.

In a desktop, a good start could be blowing out all the heatsinks with a can of compressed air. There is usually one on the processor and the video card. If those are dusty, the machine can’t cool properly

Hey, great comic. Wonderful style and art! Just got the link from MA3 with your awesome guest comic.
For your comp. Power it off, unplug everything, open it up and vacuum it out or take it outside and air it out with a can of air or I typically use an air-mattress pump. It’s probably rather dusty and things just overheated and can’t cool themselves down anymore but at least it’s powering up so hopefully it’s not the motherboard.

i shall be praying to materialize an extra fan on that cpu
until then… lets wait

Hope you can get your computer fixed We miss you!
Oh, and the book is such a great idea!

Ahh CPU overheating… I feel your pain! Easiest/cheapest way to stop that is to take your CPU and unscrew one side of the casing, then remove the casing! That won’t harm it unless you, like, play football with it or something. And then you can point any regular house-fan directly at its innards. I hope it works for you!

If it’s a laptop they sell little fans that cool your laptop fans! If it’s a desktop I’ve heard a small fan works to cool it off some.

I love how everyone is so quick to offer help ^_^

I would put money on it being an overheating powersupply, most cpu’s will throttle down if they get too hot. Powersupplies, however, cannot do that. If you do need to get a new one though, don’t go with the cheapest thing you can find; look around to find popular and highly rated models. Those will usually be your best bet.
